India, Dec. 27 -- Indian Railways plans to double train handling capacity at 48 major stations by 2030 to meet rising travel demand.

This initiative includes enhancing current terminals with additional platforms, stabling lines, and maintenance facilities, as well as developing new urban terminals.

The project will consider both suburban and non-suburban traffic, aiming for balanced capacity across stations. Key cities involved are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

The progress will be monitored through the categorization of immediate, short-term, and long-term actions, with the expectation of initial capacity increases within the next five years.
