New Delhi, Dec. 18 -- Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in clean energy usage, commissioning 898 MW of solar power by November 2023, a substantial increase from just 3.68 MW in 2014.

Currently, 2,626 railway stations are powered by solar energy, contributing to reduced energy costs and a transition towards more sustainable operations. In the current financial year, 318 stations have been added to the solar network.

Of the total solar capacity, 629 MW is used for electric train operations (traction), while 269 MW fulfills non-traction needs, including lighting and service facilities. These solar installations enhance energy security and support Indian Railways' goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030.
