India, Aug. 20 -- Australia is mulling to ban the export of waste plastic, paper, glass and tyres. Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently said that only about 12 percent of materials are properly recycled in Australia. Now the country wants that to change. Last year, Australia spent $2.8 billion to export nearly 4.5m tonnes of waste, with most going to Vietnam, Indonesia and China.
Australia now wants to improve the recycling system in the country. According to media reports, export changes would be done with industry partnership and consultation, with environment ministers to develop a timeline.
