India, Feb. 11 -- Amid a severe egg shortage triggered by an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, major retailers are now imposing strict purchase limits to better manage dwindling supplies. Trader Joe's has announced that all of its approximately 600 U.S. locations will restrict customers to one dozen eggs per day.

Costco has also joined the initiative by capping purchases at three egg packages, typically offered in two- or four-dozen cartons. Similar restrictions have been adopted by select Kroger stores and Sam's Club outlets, where limitations are tailored to local availability concerns.

The avian flu outbreak, which has eliminated millions of egg-laying birds nationwide, has precipitated a dramatic surge in egg prices.
