India, July 10 -- Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL) shares surged 11.56 percent to $56.56 after reporting stronger-than-expected second-quarter results. The airline posted net income of $2.13 billion, up from $1.31 billion a year ago, while total operating revenue remained steady at $16.65 billion.

The stock opened at $56.20 and traded between $54.83 and $57.82 on the day, with trading volume soaring to 28.8 million shares, nearly triple the average on the New York Stock Exchange. Delta shares are now trading closer to the upper end of their 52-week range of $34.74 to $69.98.
