DHARAN, Dec. 2 -- Tilak Rai of Nepali Congress has been elected as the mayor of Dharan sub-metropolitan city in the by-polls.

Rai registered the historic win defeating his nearest contestant Prakash Rai of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) with a margin of 2,795 votes.

Of 54,848 votes, winning candidate Rai garnered a total of 26,709 votes while NCP's Rai got 23,914 votes.

Similarly, Jiwan Raj Subedi of NCP has been elected the chairperson of Ward 7.
