BIRATNAGAR, Aug. 27 -- A female prisoner was found dead inside the toilet of the women's cell at Morang District Prison on Wednesday morning.

Bhattarai had been serving a life sentence handed down by the Sunsari District Court in a homicide case. She was convicted after an incident in which she jumped into the Saptakoshi River canal with her two minor children. While she and one child were rescued, the other child died, leading to the murder charge.

She had been kept at Morang Prison since January 19, 2024 and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on October 23, 2024.

Morang District Police Office said investigations are underway into the circumstances of her death.
