Nigeria, Sept. 9 -- On Tuesday, world football governing body FIFA triggered outrage after suggesting that South Africa could qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they beat Nigeria and Benin fail to win against Lesotho.
The post, made on FIFA's official X (formerly Twitter) accosunt, was accompanied by pictures of Bafana Bafana players.
Intended as a routine qualification scenario update, it instead sparked accusations of bias and double standards - especially from Nigerian fans.
Almost immediately, FIFA's post was flooded with angry replies. Many Nigerians accused the body of overlooking the unresolved issue of South Africa allegedly fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their 2-0 win over Lesotho in March.
