Nigeria, July 31 -- The United States Mission in Nigeria has drawn public attention - and sparked controversy - after it accused some Nigerian government officials of fiscal recklessness amid widespread economic hardship in the country.

In a post made Tuesday on its official Facebook page under the hashtag #TransparencyTuesday, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria criticised Nigerian leaders for what it described as poor prioritisation of public funds.

The post referenced a report by The Africa Report, which exposed how some governors are allegedly spending billions on new government buildings while asking citizens to endure austerity.
