Nigeria, Feb. 1 -- At least 700 people have been killed in eastern Congo since Sunday as fighting between the Congolese forces and the M23 rebel group rages on, according to the United Nations.

The UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, disclosed this to reporters on Friday.

Mr Dujarric said within this period, 2,800 people have also been injured, with many warehouses looted and destroyed.

According to him, an assessment by the World Health Organisation (WHO) showed that the death toll is expected to rise, and the humanitarian crisis in Goma has worsened within the last five days.
