Nigeria, April 16 -- Over 1,680 children were abducted and about 180 killed in attacks on Nigerian schools by non-state actors in the last 10 years, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said.

UNICEF's Communication Specialist, Susan Akila, in a statement to commemorate the 10-year mass abduction of school girls at Government Girls Secondary School Chibok, Borno State, urged for action to secure children's education in Nigeria.

The global agency lamented that 10 years after the first mass abduction of school children in Nigeria, attacks continued in at least 70 schools in 10 vulnerable states due to poor early warning systems in place to identify threats of abduction by non-state actors.
