Nigeria, Feb. 1 -- When Peter Obi officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on 31 December 2025, it was not surprising.

The writing was on the wall because of an intense leadership crisis in the LP.

The sign that Mr Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, would quit the LP came in July 2025, when he joined the national opposition coalition, which adopted ADC as its platform for the 2027 general elections.

The intense leadership crisis in the LP appeared to have prompted him to consider switching to the ADC.

While he remained part of the coalition without officially resigning from the LP, there were suggestions in some quarters that his action amounted to anti-party activity.
