Shedding new light on intelligent matter
Some matter is smart and can respond to external stimuli such as light. For the creation of light-responsive intelligent matter, the ERC-funded PHOTOMECH project focuses on photoswitching, molecular machines, chemical synthesis and precision engineering of multi-responsive materials. Specifically, it will develop the class of indigoid chromophores with simple and compact molecular units offering hitherto unachievable control over molecular states and motions within a single such entity.
