ClassNK issues updated EU-ETS and FuelEU Maritime FAQs covering measured methane slip for LNG-fuelled ships
Japan, Feb. 27 -- ClassNK has released updated editions of its "FAQs on the EU-ETS for Shipping" and "FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime," clarifying how measured methane slip emission factors may be applied instead of default values for ships using LNG as fuel, according to information published on the classification society's official website. The guidance addresses the practical application of the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime to LNG-fuelled tonnage above 5,000 gross tonnage calling at EU ports.The EU-ETS has applied to the maritime sector since 1 January 2024, while FuelEU Maritime entered into force in October 2023 and has applied since 1 January 2025.
