Mumbai, July 13 -- n Twelve iconic forts associated with the life and times of legendary Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have been accorded status of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.

The 'Maratha Military Landscapes of India' has become the 44th UNESCO World Heritage Site in India- which is a testament to the country's rich civilizational legacy, indigenous military engineering, and architectural brilliance.

The 12 component forts of the UNESCO's recognition are: Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohgad Fort, Khanderi Fort, Raigad Fort, Rajgad Fort, Pratapgad Fort, Suvarnadurg Fort, Panhala Fort, Vijaydurg Fort, Sindhudurg Fort in Maharashtra and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
