India, Sept. 5 -- Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Umang Singhar, has set off a major political storm with his remarks in Chhindwara, where he urged tribals to proudly assert their indigenous identity instead of calling themselves Hindus. Speaking at a meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Adivasi Vikas Parishad at the District Congress office, Singhar declared, "I proudly say that we are Adivasis, not Hindus. I have been saying this for years." Stressing the importance of preserving tribal identity, he added, "Even Shabari, who offered berries to Lord Ram, was an Adivasi. Those who have lived on this land since ancient time are Adivasis."

The statement has invited sharp reactions across the political spectrum.
