India, July 25 -- Once again, Congress has raised alarms that the present Government plans to alter the Constitution's Preamble by removing the words Socialist and Secular. But memory, it seems, can be selective and conveniently so. They forget that these words were never part of the original Constitution adopted in 1950. The words were inserted much later in 1976, during the Emergency, when Indira Gandhi ruled with near - absolute authority and democratic processes stood paralysed.
