Bhopal, June 5 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined an urgent plea challenging the incineration of hazardous waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 5,479 people and caused injuries to over five lakh individuals. The petition sought to stop the incineration of around 377 tonnes of toxic waste currently being disposed of in Pithampur, Dhar district, following a decision by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
In a response to the plea, the Supreme Court Bench, consisting of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma, pointed out that the matter had already been addressed by the Madhya Pradesh High Court and no interim orders had been granted.
