Bhopal, May 18 -- The Supreme Court pulled up the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday over the massive April fire at the Adampur landfill, ordering a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) probe.

The court was hearing a petition filed by the civic body challenging a Rs 1.8 crore fine imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in July 2023 for recurring landfill fires. Environmentalist Subhash C Pandey, who had originally approached the NGT, opposed the waiver request through advocate Harshvardhan Pandey.

The advocate argued that fires continue to break out at the landfill, citing the massive April 22 blaze that smouldered for days and blanketed nearby villages in smoke. Photographs were presented in court as evidence.
