New Delhi, May 20 -- The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to State of Jharkhand and Tata Steel Ltd on a petition challenging declaration of Jamshedpur as an industrial township, thereby doing away with the basic requirement of democracy to have municipal elections. Petition was filed a senior citizen Jawaharlal Sharma challenging notification dated 28th December, 2023, before Justices Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh.
Arguing for the petitioner, noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan and Neha Rathi pointed out said that Jharkahnd Government declaring Jamshedpur as an industrial township, thereby doing away with the basic requirement of democracy to have Municipal elections as envisaged under Part IX A of the Constitution of India.
