New Delhi, April 17 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday mooted an interim stay on certain key provisions of the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, including inclusion of non-Muslims in the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards, powers of Collectors in deciding disputes over Waqf properties and provisions on de-notifying properties declared as waqf by courts.

Heated arguments were witnessed before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on the very first day of arguments in Court No. 1. At one point in time, the CJI asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, "Will you include Muslims in Hindu endowment boards?"
