Lucknow, March 19 -- The annual Neja Mela, a long-standing religious event in Sambhal, will not be held this year after authorities declined permission,citing concerns over public sentiment and security risks. The fair, traditionally observed on the second Tuesday after Holi, is dedicated to Syed Salar Masood, a historical figure whose legacy has been a subject of debate due to his role in medieval invasions.

Officials said the decision to deny permission was influenced by objections from sections of the local community and the potential for unrest. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra emphasised that no event commemorating individuals linked to historical invasions would be allowed.
