India, Feb. 6 -- Educational endeavours in India immediately after independence were initiated in a hurry to achieve too much in too little a time, and that too, under a severe paucity of human and materialistic resources. This has proved too costly in the long run to the nation, as it now suffers non-functional schools, absentee teachers and proxy teachers!

My interpretation would be that our teacher preparation institutions have either ignored, forgotten, or failed to appreciate the importance of the values that brought the entire nation together!
