Chandigarh, April 25 -- In a significant move to tighten border security and curb the menace of cross-border drug smuggling, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday approved the recruitment of 5,500jawansin the border wing of the Punjab Home Guards. These personnel will serve as a second line of defence across the state's 553-kilometre-long international border with Pakistan, particularly in seven border districts.
The decision, announced during a high-level security review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, comes in the wake of recent terror incidents, including the attack in Pahalgam (Jammu and Kashmir).
