Chandigarh, Feb. 28 -- Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday fired a strongly-worded letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Punjabi as a main subject in the CBSE Class X curriculum. The letter also urged the inclusion of Punjabi in the list of regional languages across India, ensuring students nationwide have the option to study it.
The move comes a day after the Punjab Government issued a landmark notification making Punjabi a mandatory main subject in all schools across the State, irrespective of board affiliation. The directive categorically stated that education certificates will be null and void without Punjabi as a core subject.
