BHUBANESWAR, Sept. 24 -- The Samajwadi Party (SP) strongly opposed the hike in the power tariff from October 1. In a statement, SP State president Rabi Behera demanded that the decision be withdrawn forthwith. The outstanding amount of Rs 5,367 crore should be collected from the power distribution companies to meet the loss in the energy sector, he said.

"Power cuts are occurring very often even in Bhubaneswar. Quality power has remained a dream for the people. The decision to increase the power tariff is against the interest of consumers. If the decision is not withdrawn, our party will take to the streets," said Behera.
