Kolkata, Feb. 14 -- Bengal exploded against torture of peasants and sexual exploitation of their women at Sandeshkhali - a river island in North 24 Parganas - with supporters of Opposition BJP, CPI(M), CPI and Congress on Tuesday fighting pitched battles at different places from Basirhat to Behrmapore to Rampur leaving a bevy of agitators injured.
Clashes broke out between the police and BJP supporters when a massive rally led by State party president Sukanto Majumdar reached the SP office at Basirhat where the members of the CPI who had charged in from a different side were engaged in a skirmish with the men in uniform.
