Kochi, May 26 -- MSC Elsa 3, a Liberian container vessel, on its way from Vizhinjam Port near Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi Port sunk off Kochi coast by Sunday afternoon. According to Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and sources in Coast Guard and Indian Navy, the vessel built in 1997 and measuring 184 metres was carrying hazardous cargo containers. The possibility of marine gas oil with very low sulfur content drifting toward the shore has caused panic along the Kerala coast.
The ship which had 28 crew members on board sank completely in the Arabian Sea by Sunday afternoon. The ship took with it entire cargo while all the crew members including the captain were saved by the Coast Guard.
