KORAPUT, Feb. 3 -- The Kala Jeera rice of Koraput district that received the GI tag recently has been sent to the Jagannath Temple in Puri for making Mahaprasad.

A team comprising 12 tribal women headed for Puri on Friday after offering baskets of the Kala Jeera rice at the Jagannath temple in Koraput, known as Sabari Shreekshetra.

Originating from Odisha and manufactured by the Jaivik Shree Farmers Producers Company in Koraput district, the Kala Jeera rice is a highly aromatic native rice variety.

The aromatic, slender, small-grained rice is used for a variety of dishes like Pulao, Kheer and Biriyani.

After receiving the GI tag, this miniature version of basmati rice will be used in the service of Lord Jagannath.
