India, Sept. 3 -- A four-hour spell of heavy rain on Monday afternoon turned Gurugram into a virtual river, paralysing the city with widespread waterlogging, traffic chaos and power outages. Daily life came to a standstill as arterial roads, highways and residential colonies were submerged under two to three feet of water.

According to administration data, Gurugram recorded 133 mm of rainfall on Monday and 10 mm on Tuesday. The downpour triggered massive traffic jams, the worst being an 20-km-long bottleneck on NH-48 from the Delhi-Gurugram border near Ambience Mall to Narsinghpur. Several vehicles broke down in the deluge, while two-wheelers were nearly swept away in strong currents.
