New Delhi, July 24 -- Two days after the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the vice president (VP), the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday started the process to elect the next VP.

As several names are doing rounds in political circles as to who would replace Dhankar, the EC announced that it has started constituting the Electoral College comprising MPs of both the Houses of the Parliament.

Notably, only four of the 16 elections for the post of the VP have been won without a contest, while two elections witnessed a multi-cornered fight.
