Ranchi, May 9 -- The Jharkhand Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren today gave its nod for rechristening Ranchi-based Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University after Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat. The Cabinet took the decision today, but there was rumour of changing the name of state University as a few months back a statue of tribal freedom fighter was installed at varsity campus.
Veer Budhu Bhagat was an Indian revolutionary who led the Kol rebellion against British rule in 1831-32. He belonged to the Oraon tribe and was born on 17 February 1792 in Silgai village in Ranchi district of Jharkhand. Budhu Bhagat organized the tribals and led the rebellion against the British and was an expert in guerrilla warfare.
