Guwahati, June 26 -- The Congress should extend an unconditional apology to the people of India for imposing Emergency and dictatorship on a nation, the history and civilisation of which are rooted in democracy, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.
Emergency was one of the darkest periods in India's history and the youth today should learn about how the nation was plunged into darkness and freedom was suppressed, he asserted.
The Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi lasted until March 21, 1977. It was marked by widespread press censorship, arrests without trial and the stifling of dissent in academia, politics and civil society.
