Lucknow, March 13 -- Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding a mosque in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday asserted that forcibly altering history and suppressing faith is unacceptable. Referring to Sambhal's ancient significance, he claimed that the site predates Islam and once housed a Vishnu temple, which was destroyed in 1526.

"Sambhal has been mentioned in scriptures that are over 5,000 years old, with references to Lord Vishnu's future incarnation. Islam emerged only 1,400 years ago, meaning this history predates it by at least 2,000 years," Yogi stated. He further claimed that archaeological findings have uncovered 18 pilgrimage sites in the area.
