Bhopal, July 7 -- Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called on the Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar today at his office in New Delhi and requested his help in getting GI tag for basmati rice of Madhya Pradesh.

In the meeting, he informed that basmati rice is produced by about 80,000 farmers in 13 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Keeping in view the quality of rice, it will be appropriate to grant GI tag to basmati rice of Madhya Pradesh in the interest of farmers.

Chouhan further informed that rice of Madhya Pradesh is exported to various foreign countries, which contributes in getting foreign exchange of about Rs 3000 crore annually. Currently, farmers are unable to avail benefit because of the denial of ...
