Bokaro, May 9 -- The ambitious expansion of Bokaro Steel Plant, aimed at increasing its capacity from 5.25 MTPA to 7.55 MTPA with an estimated investment of Rs.20,000 crore, appears to be heading into uncertainty. The project, expected to generate over 2,500 direct and nearly 10,000 indirect jobs, had gained momentum after Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, H. D. Kumaraswamy, visited the plant this January to formally announce the plan following its first-phase approval. The proposed expansion includes installation of a new 4,500 cubic meter blast furnace, a thin slab casting and direct rolling facility, a calcining plant, a stamp-charge coke oven battery, and a sinter plant upgrade.
