Bhopal, April 29 -- Two prominent activists on Monday levelled serious allegations against the ongoing incineration of legacy waste from the now defunct Union Carbide pesticides production facility at Pithampur. They said they plan to move the High Court.

Addressing journalists in the state capital, Sadhana Karnik Pradhan and PN Verma claimed that reports of trial incineration were riddled with inconsistencies in mercury levels while underlining contamination fears in the vicinity of the incineration site.

According to them, around 221 kg of mercury could be present in the 358 tonnes of waste incinerated without proper environmental audits, endangering Malwa's water sources including the Gambhir River.
