New Delhi, June 12 -- Three days after the reported rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl in the Dayalpur area of northeast Delhi, a 28-year-old man was apprehended on Tuesday after a confrontation with the police, official said.

The suspect, a resident of Nehru Vihar in Dayalpur, was caught near Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, according to the official, who noted that he attempted to flee, during which he attacked a police constable with a concealed blade before being shot in the leg by the officers.

"He was being transported to Delhi when he requested the police team to allow him to use the restroom near Jheel Park in the Welcome area of Delhi," the officer mentioned.
