Manila, April 17 -- The Department of Health (DOH) advised the public against possible foodborne and heat-related illnesses this Holy Week as several areas across the country experience dangerous high heat index levels.
In a statement Wednesday, the agency said extreme heat may cause illnesses such as heat stroke, and accelerates food spoilage allowing bacteria that causes food poisoning to multiply faster.
During the Lenten season of 2024, the department recorded 122 cases of foodborne illnesses.
DOH also reminded the public to exercise caution on the road as it anticipates a surge in travel during this Holy Week.
