MANILA, Dec. 22 -- The enduring Filipino Christmas tradition of Simbang Gabi resonated powerfully at the heart of Catholicism as thousands of faithful gathered at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, led by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on Sunday.
Traditionally observed as a nine-day novena in joyful anticipation of Christmas, Simbang Gabi-also known as Misa de Gallo or Dawn Mass-continues to hold deep religious and cultural meaning, especially for overseas Filipinos who adapt the devotion to evening celebrations to accommodate work schedules.
