MANILA, Sept. 20 -- Residents in coastal areas in Batanes, Cagayan, and Ilocos Norte are warned against storm surge or life-threatening coastal flood caused by rising sea water as Typhoon Nando continues to barrel over the Philippine Sea.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday said Batanes is at "high risk" of experiencing a storm surge that could reach as high as over three meters.
The NDRRMC, citing the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), advised residents in low-lying coastal areas to evacuate.
A similar warning for one up to three-meter-high storm surge was raised for Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.
