Manila, Sept. 19 -- The Southern Negros Coastal Development Management Council (SNCDMC), an alliance which manages a marine protected area (MPA) network spanning 1,592.69 hectares, won the top award as Outstanding Network at the 2025 Para El Mar Awards ceremony held in Iloilo City Thursday night.
SNCDMC bested two other finalists, both from Palawan - the Calamianes Island Group MPA Network and Shark Fin Bay MPA Network.
In a statement, Negros Occidental's provincial government lauded the Negrense champions "for leading the way in marine conservation and inspiring the nation to safeguard our coastal ecosystems and heritage."
Established in 1996, the alliance comprises the municipalities of Cauayan and Hinoba-an, and Sipalay City.
