Manila, Jan. 13 -- Police chiefs nationwide were ordered to strengthen internal monitoring and disciplinary systems following a recent shooting in Sibulan, Negros Oriental involving an active police officer.
The directive came after a background check showed that the suspect, Staff Sgt. Bonifacio Saycon, had a prior administrative case for less grave neglect of duty after missing a court hearing.
The PNP is reviewing how Saycon's prior administrative case was handled.
"Any misconduct, no matter how minor, must be addressed immediately to prevent personnel from committing more serious offenses," acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement Tuesday.
