Manila, June 14 -- A police officer from Davao Oriental is the Philippine National Police's (PNP) latest fatality from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), raising its death toll to 71.

In a statement on Monday, PNP chief, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, said the patient, a 47-year-old police staff master sergeant assigned at Lupon Municipal Police Station in Davao Oriental, died on Saturday.

He added that the PNP continues to provide assistance to cops who contract Covid-19 and their families.

As of Monday, the PNP Health Service logged 164 new cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,865.
