MANILA, Jan. 31 -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) will establish a sea level monitoring station (SLMS) in Ternate, Cavite with the help of a private entity.

It will be the 30th in the country and the first in Ternate.

"An SLMS is used for tsunami detection and early warning. It measures changes in sea level to detect potential tsunamis," Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol told the Philippine News Agency on Friday.

Data generated from an SLMS is important for issuing timely warnings and minimizing risks to coastal communities, he added.
