Manila, Jan. 21 -- Senator Pia Cayetano on Wednesday said the discovery of natural gas at Malampaya East-1 is a significant boost to the country's energy security, citing its potential to help stabilize power supply and moderate prices over the long term.

"This is great news for our energy security, as this discovery will contribute to price stability," Cayetano said, noting that strengthening indigenous sources of natural gas reduces the country's exposure to volatile global fuel prices.

Cayetano, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, said the discovery reinforces the importance of developing domestic energy resources to lessen dependence on imported fuel and ensure a more reliable power supply.
