Manila, July 3 -- The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has apprehended 20,307 vehicles with expired registrations in June as part of the government's crackdown against unregistered and unsafe cars.

In a statement on Thursday, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, said that aside from PHP10,000 fine, unregistered vehicles will be impounded beginning August.

"The unregistered motor vehicles will be impounded until such time that they pass the roadworthiness inspection. We have to do this in the interest of a greater number of road users," he said.

Of the total apprehensions, Mendoza said 12,808 were motorcycles and 3,992 were tricycles.
