Manila, Oct. 22 -- The low pressure area (LPA) east of Taiwan has developed into tropical depression and was named Salome, the weather bureau said in a bulletin posted 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The cyclone was last tracked 255 km. north northeast of Itbayat, Batanes. It is moving south southwestward at 15 kph.

Salome packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is hoisted in Batanes, the western portion of Babuyan Islands (Calayan Is., Dalupiri Is.), and the northwestern portion of Ilocos Norte (Bangui, Pagudpud, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Laoag City). Strong winds will prevail in these areas.
