Manila, June 9 -- A low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon (habagat) will bring rain showers over a huge part of the country Monday, the weather bureau said.

The LPA, located 275 kilometers northwest of Baler, Aurora or 215 km. west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union as of 3 a.m., will cause scattered rains and thunderstorms over Ilocos Region and the provinces of Abra and Benguet.

As of 2 a.m., the LPA has a "medium chance" of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Occasional rains caused by the southwest monsoon will be experienced in Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and Antique.
