Manila, March 3 -- Classes in several schools in the National Capital Region are suspended Monday due to the scorching heat index that could reach as high as 42 degrees Celsius.

In Manila, afternoon classes in all levels in public and private schools have been suspended.

In a social media post, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna noted that the suspension of classes was based on the recommendation of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

"According to the weather forecast by Manila Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office (MDRRMO), Manila's heat index this morning will range from 36-38C, with peak heat index of 42C to be felt around 2:00 pm today," the mayor said.
